Fuvahmulah airport construction ‘begins next two-three months’

Fuvahmulah airport construction will commence within the next two-three months, Platinum Holdings Private Limited, the company assigned for the project, has said on Monday.
Manager Business Development, Hassan Mohamed said 18 parties applied to clear the land in south of Dhoodi Gamu ward near the harbour, when the company invited for bids last week. The work starts next week after selecting a party and is expected to be complete in the next two-three months after which construction begins, he added.
“About 18 parties of Fuvahmulah bade when we announced it. We are now evaluating the bids,” he said.
Locals now use the area for agriculture. But in March 2008 Finance Ministry paid the farmers Rf3.2 million for more than 6000 plants in the area.
AIMA Construction has been awarded the contract for the 1100-metre runway airport.
Under the agreement between the government and Platinum Holdings, the company should finish the work and handover the airport by June 2011. According to the company, Fuvahmulah airport will comply with standards of other airports of Maldives.
